Vita / Lebenslauf:
\'JUDGING A BOOK BY ITS COVER\' - A PERSONAL STATEMENT

We are a product of our environment, in our dress, behaviour, and body language, in fact all aspects of our personality are shaped by the social and political landscape we live in.

I am most interested in exploring the relationships we have to our complex environments. A sucessful portrait is not a democratic process, it is the exploration of the subject within a fixed and delibrate composition.

My most rewarding portraits are taken when the subject is unsure of their relationship to the camera and has not yet become complicit in the photographic process.

As with life, people\'s view of themselves is not always that close to the reality of how others perceive them.

The myth of the documentary tradition is that it is truthful, the deliberate sense of lighting and space and the placing of objects are an attempt to acknowledge my presence as the photographer with the image.

This is not strictly a true representation of life but my interpretation of it.

In my attempts to place others into their environments i acknowledge my failure to succeed myself. Regardless of the tragedy in other poeples lives i always celebrate their ability to belong.

Major influences: Otto Dix, The Arnolfini Portrait, Yan Van Eyke,Boris Mikhailov, social realism.
